The purpose of the Victim Impact Panel (VIP) program is to help drunk and drugged driving offenders to recognize and internalize the lasting and long-term effects of substance-impaired driving. This opportunity seeks to create an empathy and understanding of the tragedy, leave a permanent impression that leads to changes in thinking and behavior and prevents future offenses. In this role victims, survivors and others impacted by substance-impaired driving crashes speak briefly about the crash in which they were injured and/or a loved one was killed or injured. They do not blame or judge. They simply tell their stories, describing how their lives and the lives of their families and friends were affected by the crash. Other engagements include coordinating the panel and assisting with set up and tear down.

Life is forever changed after an impaired driving crash. Victims and survivors are often left bereaved, injured, and financially devastated. With the emotional, financial, and legal issues they face daily, victims and survivors need support to confront the challenges that lie ahead. In 2005, MADD launched the MADD Helpline, a telephone support service available to victims of substance impaired driving 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Helpline provides victims with immediate emotional support, information, and referrals to MADD entities nationwide.
